Bama Signal: What to Watch Before LSU — October 30, 2026

Editorial cutoff: October 30, 2026, 7:35 a.m. CT. Public information only.

Alabama is on its bye week, so there is no prediction this week. The LSU preview and the halftime and final calls come next Friday.

The Signal

The bye-week argument that quarterback Keelon Russell is being asked to do too much has a number behind it: against Tennessee and Texas A&M, Alabama's passing offense stayed positive (expected points added, EPA, of +0.07, near zero, and +0.74 per play) while its running game was negative (−0.63 and −0.22), per CollegeFootballData.com. The catch is LSU, whose defense ranks third nationally against the pass in EPA allowed and sixth in line yards allowed, so neither fallback is easy, and Alabama's offense is 110th of 138 in havoc allowed (tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, passes defended) against an LSU defense that is fifth in havoc.

What they're saying

  • Cover Crimson says the quarterback is carrying too much. On a bye-week episode asking whether Russell is "being asked to do too much," the hosts argued the run game is limited and the line banged up, and that "that's an awful lot to ask from a 19 year old kid" (Cover Crimson, Oct. 29). The data partly backs this up (see below).
  • Cover Crimson expects LSU to "sell out against the run." The hosts said LSU will do what Tennessee and Georgia did to make the offense uncomfortable (same episode). That is their read, not a fact about LSU's plan; the rankings split on LSU's run defense (third by opponent-adjusted success rate, 38th by EPA allowed, sixth in line yards allowed), and its pass defense is its best unit by EPA.

What the numbers say

  • Russell already is the offense in the totals. He leads Alabama in total EPA at 132.0, with receiver Lotzeir Brooks next at 28.9 and tight end Marshall Pritchett at 24.5 (CollegeFootballData.com, synced Oct. 29). His 31 designed and scramble runs succeed 65% of the time at 9.5 yards each, better than running backs Daniel Hill (61%, 4.6) and Trae'shawn Brown (50%, 5.5). (ESPN play-by-play via football.py, games through Texas A&M.) Inference: when the backs stall, the quarterback's legs are the run game.
  • Against two middling run defenses the run game was the weak half. Season-long, Alabama's runs succeed 56% of the time and its passes 48%, and its running offense ranks 15th in the country compared with what defenses allow other teams. In the Tennessee and Texas A&M games, whose run defenses rank in the middle of the country by EPA allowed, runs fell to −0.63 and −0.22 EPA per play, which is why LSU's better run numbers matter. Texas A&M day: 68 rushing yards on 2.4 per carry (ESPN box score).
  • LSU's weak spot is first down, not the run. Opponents have succeeded on 50% of first-and-10 plays against LSU, versus 38% on all plays, while Alabama is at 57% on first-and-10 (ESPN play-by-play via football.py). LSU's defense has held runs to the offense's left to 25% success (28 runs, a small sample).

  • What to watch next week: first-down success above 50%, sacks allowed (22 on 240 dropbacks this season), and whether LSU, which runs a no-huddle on 86% of its snaps, again fades as Texas A&M did in the fourth quarter (11% success, but only 9 plays).
